Day 1
Journey through the beautiful Lake District countryside and arrive at Lindeth Howe Hotel, just outside Windermere – a property once owned by Beatrix Potter. Settle into your room and enjoy a refreshing cup of tea as you survey the wonderful views over Lake Windermere. The hotel is set in 28 acres and has a 2 AA Rosette awarded restaurant. There is also a heated pool with sauna and fitness room – the perfect place to unwind.
After dinner we will all meet our tutor for the week, Jennifer Johnson, who will give us a short introductory talk on our plans for the week.
Retire to bed and listen to nothing but the tranquillity of our surroundings.
Day 2
After our first Cumbrian breakfast, we will set up and do a little sketching around the grounds of the Hotel and acclimatise ourselves with our beautiful surroundings. Following lunch we will drive down to the lakeside and with Jennifer’s guidance do a little more sketching or painting. Dinner this evening will be in a local restaurant.
Day 3
Another Lake District morning greets us. Breakfast will be taken in the hotel before we depart to Hill Top – the first property that Beatrix Potter bought in the Lake District. Here we will have a guided tour of the house and acquaint ourselves with the village of Near Sawrey – her home for many years in Castle Cottage. We will have lunch today in the Tower Bank Arms – the village pub that features in Jemima Puddleduck. There are so many places to sit and paint in this village – the choice is yours but this will be a very special place to be and everyone will be inspired by being in Beatrix’s favourite area. We will return to the hotel for some time to relax either in the gardens or in the leisure centre before meeting for dinner.
Day 4
Today we are going to visit Yew Tree Farm at Coniston – one of seven farms that she acquired as part of the Monk Coniston estate. In July 1932 Beatrix drew a lovely sketch of the ‘spinning gallery’ at Yew Tree Farm and it is still there today for us to enjoy. We will spend the whole day here and have lunch in the farmhouse as special guests. An early dinner will be enjoyed en route back to the hotel. We will have exclusive use of a private room at the hotel for those of us who want to continue sketching and painting during the evening, before turning in for the night.
Day 5
Hawkshead calls us today – home of the former office of William Heelis and now the Beatrix Potter Gallery – owned and run by the National Trust. We will have time on our own here to browse around the little alleyways and shops and see sights that were familiar to Beatrix Potter. After lunch on our own in Hawkshead, we will travel back through the area passing many of the properties which Beatrix Potter owned and hopefully understand just why she so loved the area and how it inspired her to both write and paint. We return to the hotel for our final dinner together and after dinner we will have an exhibition of all our works and who knows maybe one day some of our Lake District work will be as cherished as that of Beatrix.
Day 6
After our last hearty breakfast, we will be ready to return home full of happy memories of the wonderful Lake District and with a much greater understanding and knowledge of Beatrix Potter and what she gave to us all through her books, her paintings and her legacy to the National Trust.
